Rail of Lights Christmas & New Year’s Train – Jefferson, Texas

Experience the wonder of Christmas aboard the Rail of Lights Christmas Train in Jefferson, Texas.

The unforgettable ride on an old-fashioned steam train departs each Thursday through Sunday evening from Thanksgiving through December 23. Passengers will be awed by the lights as the story of “Christmas Across America” unfolds along the Big Cypress Bayou.

This year, also celebrate ringing in the New Year with our New Year’s Train running December 28-31. We will feature the tradition of “New Year’s Across America” and will include a fantastic fire works show.

The excursions will take you by Christmas trees simply decorated reminiscent of the bare-limbed sourwood of the Appalachian Christmas Tree to the opulence of a re-created 1885 Christmas tree in the Smith-McDowell House in Asheville, North Carolina. This year includes trees and scenes showing the cultures of Alaska, San Francisco, Hawaii and the Arizona Hopi Indian nation. Also included in the tour is a replica of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, which was first decorated during the Great Depression in 1931. Enjoy an authentic life-sized 90-year old Christmas card as well as the post card sent by soldiers during World War II.

More than 5,000 people rode the Christmas Train last year. We’ll be bringing back our riders favorites: the aluminum tree, reminiscent of the 1960’s; a whimsical teddy bear tree; and Charlie Brown’s forlorn little Christmas tree.

The children will be awed by the decorated historic railroad depot, complete with Santa Claus. The wonderful narrated tour will also give our patrons an opportunity to sing some of their favorite Christmas carols as they discover the joys of more than 80,000 lights along the river.

Ticket prices: first class all seats $12; coach class: adults $10; children and seniors (3-12 and 62+) $8. Lap children under 3 are free. First class is offered in a beautiful historic enclosed coach. If you are riding coach class, be sure to dress warmly and bring a blanket as you will be riding in open cars. First class seating is limited so purchase your tickets early.

Jefferson is nestled deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas and seems frozen in time. It is a charming town and an elegant reminder of a bygone era. The downtown area will be aglow with lights and greenery during the holiday season. There are more than a 100 buildings in the city with historical markers. Nearly 60 historic homes and buildings offer bed and breakfast accommodations. Dozens of other historic buildings house museums, craft and antique shops and restaurants.

Christmas is a holiday celebrated around the world. You’ll want to make Jefferson and the Christmas Train a part of your annual holiday festivities.
